A new season is fast approaching; as the evenings draw in and the (questionably) hot summer takes an Indian flavour our thoughts turn to……..the start of the 09/10 hockey season!
Never fear if that summer fitness routine never quite happened and there was more Pimms than Pilates because training starts again next session on the 8th September, thus giving us plenty of time to once again reach the dizzy heights of last years fitness levels and even beyond!
Training caters for all levels of ability and fitness and we welcome all ages in a relaxed atmosphere from those who have never held a stick to established players looking to play at a local level. Training is on the Astroturf at Sandy Lane, Dawlish from 6.30pm to 7.30pm every Tuesday from the 1st September if you would like more details or just a chat please call Club secretary Mandy Lovell on 07812 856324.
New joint Captains Lottie and Helen are keen to improve on last season’s third place in the league and start the season fielding full sides every week so expect our call!

A 5-1 victory
Following a shaky start to the New Year in last week’s local derby and a heavy training session Dawlish Ladies were determined to start their home game against Paignton II strongly and come away with a win.
It was not however the start that Dawlish had hoped for, the young Paignton side broke early into the Dawlish defence and within 10 minutes Paignton were 1-0 up. A rather shell shocked Dawlish re started the game and it was not long before it became clear that despite their poor start it was the home side who would control this game.
Lottie Young and Lizzie Reed held the ball in midfield and took on the Paignton defence to feed the the Dawlish forwards. As the first half continued Dawlish had opportunity after opportunity to test the Paignton back line with Mel Barnes and Yvonne Hudson coming agonisingly close.
It started to feel like it was not going to be Dawlish’s day and after Lottie Young took her second clout of the day, this time splitting open her finger, things looked like going from bad to worse. Down but not out Young took the next hit of the game finding Helen Nicholson in acres of space, Nicholson went round the Paignton backs and with a quick turn and reserve stick hit levelled the scores.
With the scores open for Dawlish the pressure continued and it was not long before a second goal took the home side ahead. Natasha Bailey, playing out of position on the left midfield, played a strong ball and Jess Green converted Yvonne Hudson’s initial strike on goal making it 2-1 at half time.
Dawlish came out for the second half and completely controlled the game, 90 percent of the play was in Paignton’s half with Dawlish back Mandy Lovell joining in the action with some great runs down the right wing. Unlike the first half Dawlish were able to capitalise on their control of the game and it was not long before a great play starting with Denise McMahon at the back ended with Jess Green scoring her second of the day.
The only real action Dawlish keeper Sarah Webster had in the second half was to question how Dawlish had so little short corners from all their pressure in the Paignton D? Despite the umpires decision not to reward Dawlish for their pressure they continued to increase the score line; Anne Darby switched from her normal right mid position played the ball to Nicholson whose second strike found its way round the back of the keeper.
As the game drew to a close Paignton seemed to be drained by the constant Dawlish pressure and an unmarked Nicholson once again found the back of the Paignton goal. With a 5-1 victory Dawlish were happy and hoping that their form will continue to improve in 2009.

Local Derby
Having had a succession of games canceled, due to frozen all weather pitches, this Saturday’s league game was not only Dawlish ladies first match of 2009 but their first in over six weeks.
Starting the year with a bang Dawlish faced local rivals Teignmouth for the always competitive local Derby. Dawlish were without regular back Mandy Lovell with young player stepping in Rhiannon Depla to fill the gap, a strong Dawlish side took to the field with ambitions to start 2009 with winning ways.
The match started with both sides giving very little away and playing tight in midfield where the real battle for the game was fought. Both sides had opportunities to break into the oppositions half and take on the defense; the Teignmouth forwards could not find a way past and Natasha Bailey who both Rhiannon Depla had solid performances all match at the back. The central Dawlish midfield of Lottie Young and Lizzie Reed were able to feed the ball to Helen Nicholson who took on the Teignmouth backs but could not quite find the other Dawlish forwards to covert the good work into a goal.
As half time approached Dawlish’s lack of match fitness was beginning to show, they were not using the width to reach speedy wings Jess Green and were Mel Barnes struggling to get the ball through the Teignmouth line from their own hit outs. Dawlish Captain rallied the troops and half time with some tactical changes and threats of cardio training.
The second half started much as the first with no team controlling the match and a battle in midfield to maintain possession, but it was Teignmouth who eventually took an attacking control with the ball reaching a Teignmouth striker on the top of the D un-marked whose shot found its way past the Dawlish keeper to open the scoring.
Teignmouth’s goal seemed to be the motivation Dawlish needed to take control of the game, with Amy Reed playing out wide and the striking power of Gemma Wilkes on the forward line Dawlish put constant pressure on the Teignmouth goal mouth forcing a succession of short corners.
The Dawlish equalizer game from a strong cross field pass by Young to Anne Darby out on the right, Darby drove the ball into the D which eventually found its way to Helen Nicholson who pushed the ball home for the well deserved equalizer. The Teignmouth players attempted to dispute the goal, however both umpires were happy and the score remained at 1.1 for the final whistle. Although Dawlish would have liked a win against local rivals and certainly game very close to getting it in the later stages of the second half a draw seemed like a fair reflection of the tight fought local Derby.

Cup Match vs. Plymouth University
At 8pm on a very cold Friday night Dawlish ladies faced Plymouth University in the first round of the cup. Following some depleted Dawlish turnouts it was a full team with substitutes that braved the cold night air.
From the start it was a fast paced and physical game but the young Dawlish players of Rhiannon Depla, Amy Reed and Mel Barnes were strong from the start. Plymouth opened the scoring going one nil up and demonstrating that in front of goal they are not going to hold back.
The Dawlish side fought back with great attacking runs and Helen Nicholson broke through the Uni midfield and with one man to go was obstructed falling dramatically. Dawlish break again and this time Nicholson plays the ball into Denise McMahon in the D who holds the ball up and shoots to level the score.
The back two of Many Lovell and Sue Trout keep the Uni forwards at bay but before half time they go ahead again. Dawlish come back strong in the second half winning a succession of short corners from positive attacking play. Anne Darby’s short corner is played to Nicholson who finds a way through the defenders and scores to level the score.
Plymouth seemed determined not to go home with anything less than a win and in the pursuit of their winning goal it was the Dawlish players not the goal which took a beating. A high shot from the top of the D hit Anne Darby in the face and Dawlish lost their right half.
The next Dawlish player to receive a high ball to the body was influential mid field player Lottie Young who took the full blow the arm. Uni eventually found away past the Dawlish defence and Keeper Sarah Webster to take the lead again.
Dawlish continued to fight hard but once Young left the field to leave a ten man Dawlish Uni took advantage and took the game out of Dawlish’s reach to make the final score 2-4.
League match vs. Ottery Crickets
It was a slightly worse of wear Dawlish team that faced Ottery Crickets last Saturday following their physical match against Plymouth University the previous evening but none the less a full side keen to record a league victory.
Dawlish controlled the game from the whistle and despite last night’s injury Anne Darby made some great runs down the right wing which Grace Clifford was unfortunate not to convert to open the scoring.
Despite the positive start it was not long before Dawlish seemed to be suffering from playing their second match in 24 hours and were letting the match be played at Crickets pace and style. It was Crickets who eventually scored before half time finally finding a way past Dawlish Keeper Sarah Webster.
Dawlish came out positive again in the second half with Jess Green showing no signs of slowing down as she out ran the Crickets defenders. Fresh legs of Amy and Liz Reed came on to replace injured Nicholson and Young and the pace of the game turned to Dawlish’s advantage. The home side showed strength and control in midfield from Gemma Wilkes and Lizzie Reed and some great movement sent Jess Green on another great run into the Crickets D and passed the keeper to level the scores.
Dawlish were disappointed not to get a second goal with Green coming close again but at the final whistle some tried legs were happy to leave the field with a point.

Close to a Win
Once again Dawlish Ladies were traveling away from home with a depleted side fielding only a nine man side for the second week in a row and it was not a positive team that took to the pitch.
But despite the lack of numbers the Dawlish team that made the trip to Exeter to face the young ISCA 4ths team gave 110% from the push back.
Mandy Lovell and Natasha Bailey were solid at the back putting in strong tackles to keep the ISCA out of shooting range. Sarah Webster the Dawlish goalie gave the young ISCA forwards who did get through a battle to open the scoring.
However on the counter attack the ISCA forwards broke the Dawlish back line and ISCA went one nil up.
Lizzie Reed and Lottie Young were strong in central midfield and controlled the game but with only two up front Dawlish fail to capitalise despite Jess Green coming close with a one on one with the keeper and ISCA make it two nil at half time.
Half time and Dawlish are determined that they can come back from two nil down, Dawlish start to control the game with some great runs from the right by Jess green. Dawlish finally get the break they have worked for and a shot from Helen Nicholson finds it way round the keeper to put the scores at two one.
Dawlish continued to put pressure on the ISCA backs with Anne Darby making some great attacking runs and the Dawlish forwards putting the ISCA goalie under constant pressure.
As the final whistle drew close Dawlish just could not get the ball into the back of the ISCA goal despite some shots great shots coming close from Lottie Young and Gemma Wilkes.
The nine man Dawlish side played a with the strength and passion of a full side but were always going to be in trouble playing with two men short. But for the second week in a row they left the pitch so close to a win which it seemed would have been simple had they started with a full team.
